Contemporary Actor Training

THEA 1315

This course is designed to help students develop tools for building ensemble cohesion by practicing open and clear communication; setting and respecting boundaries; fostering a sense of belonging through equity, diversity, and inclusion; and learning creative approaches to conflict resolution. We will explore these through the lens of devised performance–the collective creation of original work–in which students will develop their own artistic material including text, movement sequences, vocal soundscapes, and other creative possibilities. Throughout this process we will experiment with different leadership dynamics as well as decolonial arts practices with an emphasis on communal care and valuing each voice within the whole. In doing so, we aim to establish the conditions for our best selves to do our best creative work. The course will also feature an international component through collaboration with a sister cohort of performers in Latin America via a series of guided reflections over Zoom, to compliment and motivate our in-person classes and rehearsals. We will expand our creative horizons across the barriers of language and culture, appreciating how a diversity of perspectives can strengthen the ensemble and inspire us each to grow beyond our habits and limiting beliefs as artists. Students with interest in acting, dance, music, creative writing, and/or directing are encouraged to register. The semester will conclude with a showing of work-in-progress open to invited guests.
