Special Topics in Performance: Intimacy Choreography & Consent for Performing Artists

Working with consent and confidence to tell exciting stories of intimacy on stage or in film requires two things: an understanding of oneself as an artist and the use of theatrical intimacy best practices. This course covers both those facets and will prepare participants to work more confidently and with more tools on theatrical material containing charged content. The course will cover power dynamics, consent-focused exercises, boundary practices, choreography creation, troubleshooting, handling tough conversations, self-care techniques, and rehearsal processes for handling the staging of intimate content. Physical contact is not required, and participants may engage at their own level of comfort. This class will involve a mix of lecture, discussion, and practical in-class work in addition to reading materials or articles pertaining to the subject matter, critiquing filmed examples of intimacy choreography, and giving performance presentations.
