Disability and Performance on the Global Stage

THEA 0825

This course explores the multiple convergences of performance and disability globally, through theatre and dance production, television and film media, and political activism. We will consider both disabled performers and audiences and examine the ways in which disability intersects with other identity and political categories, including race, class, gender, sexuality, and nationality. We will examine disability in performance as it travels globally, looking at critical reception of internationally touring productions as well as cross-national political movements for disability rights/justice. We will analyze the ways in which disability appears (or doesn't) onstage and in everyday life, and how this translates across cultures and borders.
