Abby Dobry is a theatre arts major.
How do you see your theatre education contributing to your future goals?
What I love about the theatre department at Pitt is that you get to learn a little bit about everything. I have taken risks and pushed my boundaries in performance classes and my creative and collaboration skills have flourished in design/tech courses. I love working with like-minded theatre artists where I can take responsibility in leaderships positions or while being a dedicated team player. Not to mention the general communication, organization and time management skills that are beneficial to my future goals outside of theatre.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I would love to stay in Pittsburgh for a while. I think there is more to this city that I haven’t seen yet. I am hoping to work at a theater company in an administrative position and maybe perform on the side. I am also a nonfiction English writing major, and my dream job would be working for Playbill or BroadwayWorld writing articles. But I also love creative writing so maybe a play or novel is in my future.
What do you enjoy doing outside of academics?
I read! Mostly fiction but I also have been enjoying books about the medieval and renaissance periods which I am getting a certificate for here at Pitt. I also take care of plants and like going on walks listening to music. Journaling has also grown as a hobby of mine. Whether it’s more self-reflection or entirely creative, I find that it releases a lot of stress and helps me stay grounded.
Is there something you would like to share that you wish we asked you about?
This department really makes me feel welcome. The connections I make with students, faculty, and staff here are ones I will cherish for the rest of my life. That’s what I love most about theatre. The community around you and the people that make it.
